Derrick Ramirez has been making people dance since the early 90’s. Whether you enjoyed one of his dj sets or have been touched by his work behind the scenes…. if you’ve been into dance music in the last 15 years there’s a good chance Derrick has made you move at some point in your life.
Born in Toronto and raised in the city’s Scarborough suburb, Derrick moved to Michigan after high school, first to the Ann Arbor area where he held several residencies. He later called downtown Detroit home, where he was known both for his djing as well as his work as Label Manager for Derrick May’s seminal Transmat Records.
At Transmat, Derrick and the team helped introduce the world to a new Detroit sound, working with artists like Luciano, Jeremy Ellis and Aril Brikha. Locally, the events Derrick produced introduced Motown to artists like Derrick Carter, Peanut Butter Wolf, the UK’s Omar and Toronto’s Kenny Glasgow.
As Festival Director of Detroit’s Movement Festival, Derrick oversaw the last 2 years of the ‘free’ version of the event, which highlighted artists like J Dilla (RIP), Liquid Liquid and ESG and Francois K.
Today Derrick resides back in his hometown of Toronto where he continues to dj and host events at various clubs and venues.
